Development of ready to use formulation for enhance the shelf life and quality of cut flowers

Flowers are end up with short vase life resulted high wastage. These losses are lead to poor pre harvest and postharvest practices. Problem is, both temperate and tropical cut flowers are last only for a few days, therefore unable to keep natural beauty and attractiveness in decorations for even required time. Flowers end up with a short post-harvest life because of early senescence, wilting, petal falling, ethylene production and vascular blockage by air and micro-organisms. Therefore they are failure to earn good income. This activity is to develop a ready to use formula to improve quality and vase life of cut flowers which are short live. Using appropriate preservation techniques could help to extend the vase life and reduce post- harvest losses. There is lack of readily use technique for shelf life improvement of cut flowers in Sri Lanka. Ready to use and easily available compounds is always crucial in this respect for small scale and large-scale decorations.

Three ready to use formulas were prepared using different combinations. Preservative solutions were prepared by dissolving above three formulas. Gerbera, anthurium and orchid cut flowers were collected from flower growers and checked the vase life of these three flower spp. after placed in preservative solutions. The effort was success and gave positive results. Gerbera and anthurium showed good results under one combination and orchid gave best results under another combination.
