Identification of currently available stored pests in food commodities and evaluating potential plant based chemicals under plastic hermetic storage container in Sri Lanka

Cereals and grain legumes play a vital role in Sri Lankans’ diet. Cereals and other grains are the main energy source of the food and pulses perform as one of the protein source. Postharvest loss of grains/pulses is around 10-15% in which storage losses accounts for 6% of the total loss thus storage is the most critical point in grain/pulses supply chain. Insect pests are one of the most important biotic constraints affecting a significant loss of stored grains/pulses throughout the world as well as in Sri Lanka. During the last few decades, several synthetic pesticides have been applied to protect stored grains from insect infestation. However, continuous use of agrochemicals has imposed many detrimental effects.  Therefore, the aim of this study is to develop non-hazardous alternative methods to overcome this issue.
